چکیده

This paper addresses the following issue: given a set of daily observations on an asset (historical opening, closing, high and low prices), how should one go about estimating the asset’s volatility? We use high-frequency data on very liquid assets to construct daily realized volatility series, which enables us to treat volatility as observed rather than latent. We then compare the empirical performance of various estimators of asset return volatility against the realized volatility benchmark. This procedure makes it possible, for the first time, to study the bias and relative efficiency of the various estimators directly. The stock index results give overwhelming support to the use of extreme value volatility estimators, but the futures and currency results are less clear. We highlight a number of important instances in which extreme value volatility estimators are both less biased and more efficient than the traditional estimator. JEL Classification Codes: C14, C53, F31.

Modeling and Forecasting Volatility in Indian Capital Markets

Various volatility estimators and models have been proposed in the literature to measure volatility of asset returns. In this paper, we compare empirical performance of various unconditional volatility estimators and conditional volatility models (GARCH and EGARCH) using time-series data of S&PCNX Nifty, a value-weighted index of 50 stocks traded on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), Mumbai. Th...

Extreme Value Modelling with Application in Finance and Neonatal Research

Modelling the tails of distributions is important in many fields, such as environmental science, hydrology, insurance, engineering and finance, where the risk of unusually large or small events are of interest. This thesis applies extreme value models in neonatal and finance studies and develops novel extreme value modelling for financial applications, to overcome issues associated with the dep...

Modeling Gold Volatility: Realized GARCH Approach

F orecasting the volatility of a financial asset has wide implications in finance. Conditional variance extracted from the GARCH framework could be a suitable proxy of financial asset volatility. Option pricing, portfolio optimization, and risk management are examples of implications of conditional variance forecasting. One of the most recent methods of volatility forecasting is Real...

Maximum Empirical Likelihood Estimation of the Spectral Measure of an Extreme-value Distribution

Consider a random sample from a bivariate distribution function F in the max-domain of attraction of an extreme-value distribution function G. This G is characterized by two extreme-value indices and a spectral measure, the latter determining the tail dependence structure of F . A major issue in multivariate extreme-value theory is the estimation of the spectral measure Φp with respect to the L...

Improving Second Order Reduced Bias Extreme Value Index Estimation

• Classical extreme value index estimators are known to be quite sensitive to the number k of top order statistics used in the estimation. The recently developed second order reduced-bias estimators show much less sensitivity to changes in k. Here, we are interested in the improvement of the performance of reduced-bias extreme value index estimators based on an exponential second order regressi...
